Early Potato Pembrokeshire has joined Welsh lamb, Welsh beef and wine as Welsh products which are protected under the Protected del monte international Food Name scheme of the EU. This is the same protection afforded to other products such as Champagne and Parma ham and that means only potatoes that have been grown in Pembrokeshire can be marketed as such.
The protected food name scheme exists to highlight regional and traditional foods that can trace their origin and authenticity. It gives them legal protection against imitations within the EU and may possibly also raise awareness of the product throughout Europe, thereby increasing demand.
To be considered for protection, food or drink must be produced using local or traditional methods. They must also have features that are different from those from similar products because of the geographical area where they are produced. To register and obtain legal protection, the product must prove competence through the application process. During this process, the proposal will: be developed del monte international in conjunction with the Welsh Government's food division; procedure text object del monte international across the UK; be assessed by Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs of the UK); subject to scrutiny by the European Commission; procedure del monte international object del monte international and text across del monte international the EU.

(Eg Pork Old Spots' Farmed Gloucestershire in Traditional with unique qualities - eg physical and chemical characteristics - the breed of pig to traditional farming techniques used)
Pembrokeshire early potatoes have PGI status after Puffin Produce, a company that developed from Pembrokeshire Potato Marketing Group, and the growers they represent own the majority of the company, may apply for the status. A Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef PGI status, with HCC acts as the body that maintains the integrity del monte international of the labels, as well as promoting the designation. A lot of the Welsh wines either PGI status or Protected Designation of Origin UK Vineyards Association is sponsoring plans.
